Course Description
Over the past decade, scores of articles have been written on the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) with individuals with various medical conditions. The research base is strong, yet clinicians may not be aware of, or have experience with, clinical applications from this work. Undoubtedly, many clients will directly experience a health-related issue during the therapeutic course. These individuals often invest much of their energy towards controlling their symptoms and tend to avoid meaningful activities.
This interactive workshop combines didactic and experiential methods and is designed for practitioners familiar with the basic tenets of ACT. Based on expertise from decades of experience imbedded in medical settings, Dr. Martin will teach attendees how to use the power of language and experiential learning to target coping with pain and other aspects of physical illness as well as health behavior change such as increasing daily functioning and health-promoting behaviors. Skills building approaches will be incorporated via experiential exercises, case presentations, and role-playing exercises.
Target Audience
This workshop is for clinicians who are familiar with ACT and who would like to add to their current ACT repertoire. It is appropriate for mental health professionals, including Psychologists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Psychiatrists, Social Workers, and Psychiatric Nurse-Practitioners.
After attending this training you will be able to:
1) Discuss how people with chronic health conditions use avoidance and fusion in the context of their illness
2) Describe two ACT exercises that can be helpful for clients with health conditions
3) Name one research finding relevant to ACT for chronic pain
